The NSPA invites you to enjoy baarish ka mausam with its "dangerous stages"!
|
Hello there!
We, at the National Streets for Performing Arts (NSPA), enjoyed an interesting moment yesterday at Andheri Station's ticket window (where we perform on Thursday mornings and evenings) - a silent, interested gentleman enjoying our newly recruited Rajasthani and Punjabi folk artists turned to us and said, "Yeh toh sabse khatarnak stage hai!" ("This is the most dangerous stage of all!") He was right - having our musicians and singers perform live for public audiences is certainly challenging, but it's also our favourite part! The world's most famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes had a problem with all of humanity - he accused everybody of seeing but not observing. In an incurably hectic city like Mumbai, it is easy to get swept away in a crowd and yet be distant from everybody around us. When it feels like the only music in your lives comes from your phones and music players, open your eyes and keep an ear out - aur "aaja pyaare paas hamare, kaahe ghabaraye!"

Konkani folk and country singer Heloise and guitarist Clint claim that there are fewer more effective ways of getting parents nostalgic for the Goan masala music they jived to during their teens, or get children enthused about playful folk tunes telling stories about Goan fishing villages, than by teaching them old school Goan numbers - and that is exactly what they did! conducted an interactive musical workshop at MCubed Library (Bandra) on the 19th of July, as part of the Art Literacy mission of the NSPA which aims to create awareness about various art forms, genres and their vocabularies. The children certainly seemed to enjoy themselves, echoing Heloise's rendition of "Mando Goencho Khoro" and ending with a Bambaiya masala medley! We loved encountering a library that seemed to have replaced its "Quiet Please!" signboards with "Play On!"

"And that is how change happens. One gesture. One person. One moment at a time." - Libba Bray For us at the NSPA, change comes in the form of one performer, one melody, one beautiful high note. On a mission to recruit some new talent, we held artist auditions last Saturday and were thrilled to find an admirable array of young musicians and vocalists aspiring to bring music to pedestrians and railway frequenters. We heard everything from Rajasthani folk to improvisational flute pieces, from Hindustani classical fusion vocals to song covers of folk rock band Simon and Garfunkel! We'd like to thank everybody for coming in, and hope that they keep working on their music!
